Why Join?
For those young men looking for more in the way of personal development and experience than the classroom can provide, the answer is simple: OUR BROTHERS.
If you have spent any time navigating this site and reading Chi Phi history, PIK History, or our core values, you should by now realize that our entire purpose -- our raison d'être -- is the personal development of young men by means of friendship and the associated responsibility that comes with that friendship.
Moreover, it is our hope that once a man sets foot upon the path of personal development while a student and active Brother, he will choose to tread upon it throughout the remainder of his life; forever keeping faith with those other Alumni Brothers in our fraternity. And traditionally, he will elect to "pay it forward" to the young men who follow in his footsteps.
The path is not always easy, nor is it clearly marked. From time to time, we have lost it and failed due to complacency or overconfidence. But for the last 100 years we have ever found it again, and placed our feet upon it more squarely than before because OUR BROTHERS have ever stepped forward with a light to lead us.
And so it shall be again. Upon our 100th Anniversary, PIK Brothers -- Alumni spanning the decades of 1960, 1970, 1980, and 1990 have joined forces to build a new Chapter House and establish a new Chi Phi Colony on the grounds of URI. With the experienced help of officers from the National Office, these PIK Alumni are firmly committed to the tutelage and mentoring of a new class of young men who will one day take our place.
This is not an empty promise. Once formal bids are given and accepted, new pledges will work closely with Chi Phi Alumni.
- Immediate commencement of Officer Training. A formal program established by experience and tradition will teach the basics of leadership over a one week period.
- Continuous support from three local Colony Advisors. These outstanding Chi Phi Alumni will be with you throughout every step of training to answer questions, clarify procedures and monitor development of the colony. They will remain throughout the 2008-2009 academic year and ensure the firm foundation of the colony, until such time as they elect to step down and be replaced by new advisors.
- Detailed advancement plan. Before the PIK Colony can regain full Chapter status, it will need to accomplish every one of a written list of 35 requirements. These requirements will require the cooperation of the entire colony over several semesters of work, and it will be up to the new Brothers to ensure their completion.
- Real life Alumni workshops. PIK Alumni will conduct workshops relating to the operation of an active chapter from areas of real-life expertise. Budgeting and Accounting Workshop for colony officers led by a House Corporation officer; Recruitment Workshop for all Brothers led by an Alumni Marketing Executive; Legal Workshop for all Brothers led by an Alumni Attorney, etc.
In truth, there has never been a better time to join Chi Phi at URI. With the benefit of a clean slate, a highly-engaged Alumni Council, and immediate support from the Chi Phi National office, the next two years will be among the most challenging and rewarding in our 100 year history. The young men who choose to respond to this challenge will forever take a vaunted place upon the rolls of PIK, and will have the opportunity to create an organization in their image.
All we, the Alumni Brethren of PIK, ask in return is that you "pay it forward."
